![]() ![]() I do not think either style had a more significant impact on Renaissance art, but rather they individually affected the Renaissance in different ways. Both painting show the power of color through their mediums and give a bright, passionate, and luxurious feel to them. di Buoninsigna’s painting, he used tempera paint and golf leaf on wood and the Limbourg brothers used ink on vellum for their piece. The Limbourg brother’s January (page 410 figure 15-15) from the early Renaissance period and Duccio di Buoninsigna’s Betrayl of Jesus (page 386 figure 14-11) are prime example of the brightness of colors used during their respective eras. ![]() On the other hand, the bright and luminous paintings of the Byzantine and Renaissance greatly contrast with the works in the Gothic style. For example, the Bamberg Rider in the east choir of Bamberg Cathedral in Germany is a sandstone sculpture and has very distinct Gothic style: the facial expression of the rider is stoic and ambiguous. The mediums of art used in the Gothic style were traditionally sculpture, metal work, and architecture-the same cannot be said of the Byzantine and Renaissance era. Humanism was at its height during the Renaissance and therefore more influenced by the Byzantine era of art. The facial expressions, placement, and bodily gestures give each of the figures in the fresco painting a definite humanistic feel. The piece is of the Byzantine style and can be found page 382, figure 14-9. Whereas Giotto di Bondone’s Lamentation in the Arena Chapel depicts Jesus Christ being removed from the cross and the sorrowful outbursts emotions of the by-standers such as the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene. The sculptures render little emotion or purpose in their ambiguous stance. For example, figure 13-49 on page 369 features two statues Ekkehard and Uta in the west choir of Naumberg Cathedral in Germany. ![]() Humanism in art celebrates the emotional, dramatic, and the individual-something not quite achieved in Gothic art. Gothic works of art do not capture the same feeling of humanism in their overall style. The humanism seen in works of art of the Renaissance period also is seen in the Byzantine style of art. The two pieces mentioned both have the same premise and similar subject matter which leads me to believe that the piece created by Memling’s was heavily influenced my Cimabue’s and the style of the Byzantines. The mother and child are also front and center on the center panel of the Saint John altarpiece. Hans Memling’s Virgin with Saints and Angels (page 409 figure 15-4) also depicts the Virgin Mary cradling baby Jesus with many onlookers that include angels and saints. On the other hand, a piece from the early Renaissance depicts a very similar picture like Cimabue’s piece. I also took note that Mary and Jesus are front and center in the piece. The Virgin Mary sits on a throne with a baby Jesus Christ on her lap with angels and prophets looking on in adoration. ![]() The depth of the painting is relatively flat and depicts a religious scene. Seen on page 380 figure 14-7, Cimabue’s Madonna Enthroned with Angels and Prophets is a great example of Byzantine art. A similar trend of subject matter can be paralleled from two different time periods and places: a piece by an Italian painter around 1280-1290 and another by a Flemish painter in 1479. These relations in subject matter to Christianity and religion come directly from art from the Byzantine era. The subject matter of the Renaissance art that we have studied so far in Art 211 has been about religion-more specifically depictions of Biblical stories including Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, angels, saints, the Apostles, etc. After simply looking and thinking critically about which one influenced Renaissance art, I felt that Byzantine art had more of an influence for three specific reasons: the subject matter of Renaissance art, the humanism aspect of Renaissance art, and the mediums used in Renaissance art. After considering the style and influences of Gothic and Byzantine art on Renaissance art, I felt as if one had a greater impact on Renaissance art. ![]()
